Seinäjoki Airport is one of the seven bases of FinnHEMS, which provides medical helicopter services. The on-call crew has access to a helicopter and a rapid emergency vehicle, i.e. a doctor or ambulance. The crew always includes an on-call emergency doctor, a pilot and a HEMS paramedic or HEMS rescuer.
The Seinäjoki unit has over a thousand flight operations annually. The Seinäjoki medical helicopter base began operations in autumn 2022. The unit's emergency medical service is provided by the Pirkanmaa welfare region.

Airport history
The Rengonharju Foundation is a stable operator established by municipalities that has promoted aviation activities in South Ostrobothnia since 1978. The foundation built Seinäjoki Airport and still owns the area's infrastructure, equipment and equipment, which it has leased for use by Seinäjoki Lentoasema Oy.
The foundation's properties are home to Seinäjoki Education Municipality Consortium Sedu Logistics Education and Seinäjoki Airport Oy. The Rengonharju Foundation is part of the Seinäjoki City Group, and is supported by Seinäjoki, Ilmajoki, Kurikka and Lapua. A total of 27 million euros have been invested in the area - with the aim of strengthening vitality and supporting aviation-related education and business activities.
Seinäjoki Airport is located in Ilmajoki, approximately 14 kilometers south of the center of Seinäjoki. Construction of the airport began in 1976, and the first aircraft landed at the airport on October 17 of the same year. The airport was officially inaugurated in 1983, when scheduled air traffic also began.
The airport has seen significant investment in development over the years. A new air traffic control tower was opened in 1992 and the terminal was expanded in 2003. In 2006–2008, the runway was extended and widened to accommodate jet traffic, and a 2,000-meter runway was opened in July 2008. This led to the launch of recreational jet passenger flights in 2009.
Scheduled air traffic from Seinäjoki has been intermittent at times. Several airlines operated from the airport in the 2000s, but profitability challenges led to the permanent end of scheduled flights in 2013. Since then, the airport has served charter flights, general aviation, and government and rescue flights.
In 2015, the Rengonharju Foundation, which previously operated the airport, announced that it would cease operations. Since 2016, the airport has been operated by Seinäjoki Airport Oy, which continues to operate as a non-profit company owned by local operators.
